In 508 BCE, Athens, Greece was mired in legislative gridlock and bitter animosity. Cleisthenes, who was born into Athenian aristocracy, significantly reformed the political structure and process of Athens. His work gave the “demos” (people) its “kratia” (power), from which the current word “democracy” is derived. Due to the changes he enacted, Cleisthenes is often referred to as the founder of modern democracy.
